Training on gender equality and gender-based violence
The Judicial Academy and UN Women, the United Nations agency for gender equality - office in Serbia, organized a two-day training "Gender equality and gender-based violence" intended for judges of higher and basic courts from the area of the Court of Appeal in Belgrade and public prosecutors of higher and basic public prosecutor's offices from the area of the Appellate Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade.
The training was held on October 17 and 18, 2024 in Arandjelovac, and was implemented within the project "Suppression of violence against women and girls in Serbia" implemented by UN Women.
The goal of the training was to raise the capacities of public prosecutors and judges when it comes to gender equality and gender-based violence in civil and criminal legal proceedings. The basic concepts of gender equality were discussed, including gender stereotypes and prejudices, which lead to discrimination and violence.
In the following, it was discussed about the position of women and men in court disputes in civil matters, both in general civil proceedings and in special proceedings for the protection of discrimination in accordance with the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination.
In addition to crimes of gender-based violence, including predicate crimes, femicide was also discussed, as the most extreme form of violence against women, with an emphasis on the gender determination of this form of crime, which represents the last act of violence against the victim, because femicide is almost always preceded by violence.
