Provision of free legal aid to persons at risk of statelessness
The Judicial Academy, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), organized a seminar on "Providing free legal aid to persons at risk of statelessness" in the premises of the municipality of Vračar on November 27, 2025.
Welcome speeches were given by Bojan Stojanović from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Andrea Delibašić, advisor in the Department for Research and Improvement of Education.
The lecturers at the seminar were Dr. Mirjana Martić, permanent lecturer at the Judicial Academy, and Milan Radojev, legal coordinator in the non-governmental organization "Praxis".
Bojan Stojanović from UNHCR introduced the participants to the topic and briefly presented international standards in the field of statelessness, as well as the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the non-governmental sector.
The training program included the following topics:
• persons at risk of statelessness and challenges in accessing rights,
• procedures for obtaining personal documents (registrations in registers, acquisition of citizenship and registration of residence),
• representation in proceedings.
The target group of participants were lawyers at the services for providing free legal aid in municipalities, as well as participants of the initial training.
The Judicial Academy takes the opportunity to thank the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for its support in the implementation of this training program.
Continuation of training on statelessness and free legal aid is planned for the next calendar year.
