Participation of the Judicial Academy in THEMIS 2023 competition
The beneficiaries of the initial training of the Judicial Academy continued the long-standing tradition of successful participation in the Themis competition of the European Judicial Training Network (European Judicial Training Network-EJTN).
This year, the Academy was represented by two teams in the semi-final groups from family law and ethics in justice at the international competition of European Judicial Academies in knowledge of the practical application of the European Convention on Human Rights and European Union law.
The first team consisting of the beneficiaries of the initial training from the Niš appeal: Ana Petrović, Iva Zdravković and Jovana Kocić, led by mentor Ljiljana Marjanović Andrić, judge of the High Court in Niš, participated in the semi-final group dedicated to family law with a work on the topic "What would Solomon do?" The concept of relocation cases and the practical problems and dilemmas". Our team was praised by the jury for its innovation in choosing a topic and critical approach to problem analysis.
The second team consisting of eleventh generation initial training beneficiaries from the area of Belgrade appeal: Jovan Nikolić, Suzana Mićović and Ivana Jakovljević under the mentorship of judge Dejan Milovanović competed with the work on the topic "Freedom of Expression as a Tool for Protection of Judicial Independence" in the semi-final group devoted to ethics in the judiciary. In the competition from 10 countries, our team entered the first five, winning a special jury award for contribution to the development of judicial independence in Serbia. The jury especially praised the critical thinking when dealing with the topic, originality in approach and public presentation, as well as knowledge of the practice of the courts in Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
The Judicial Academy takes the opportunity to once again thank the teams for their efforts and success.
We remind you that the Judicial Academy, as an observer country, has been participating in the THEMIS competition since 2018, achieving notable results, which is another proof of the quality of the initial training at the Judicial Academy as well as its importance in the professional development of future holders of judicial positions.
In the coming period, the Academy plans with great pleasure to continue work on the promotion of the competition, motivation and support for the working generations of users of the initial training to prepare for participation in the competition as another form of successful cooperation with the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN), but also work on the wider professional development of young lawyers, future holders of judicial positions.
The main goal of the THEMIS competition is to bring together future referees from different European countries for a period while they are undergoing entry-level training in order to enable them to share common values and exchange new experiences. THEMIS competition is a forum for discussion on European and international legal topics and an opportunity to encourage the development of critical thinking and communication skills of future judges.
