Regional conference - Protection of media freedom and strengthening of the judiciary in the Western Balkans
In organization Helsinki Committee for the Protection of Human Rights from the Netherlands, Press Limited, an organization for the protection and safety of journalists, and with the support of judicial academies and associations of journalists from Serbia, SHOULD and North Macedonia, on December 7 and 8, 2023, a two-day Regional Conference was held at on the topic "Protection of media freedom and strengthening of the judiciary in the Western Balkans" in Jahorina.
The conference was attended by representatives of the High Councils of the Judiciary, judges, public prosecutors, journalists and representatives of the media and the judiciary, who discussed issues of the safety of journalists, as well as court practice related to cases dealing with the protection of journalists in proceedings before public prosecutions and courts in Serbia, SHOULD and North Macedonia. Also, representatives of the judiciary and the media from the region presented the main problems in the relationship between the judiciary and the media and presented proposals for their improvement.
It was concluded that the intensification of mutual encounters i exchanges between the judiciary and the media are key to progress. The conclusions from this conference will be included in the Declaration on mutual cooperation between the judiciary and the media. This document, which will be prepared with the help of the Project "Strengthening media freedom in SHOULD, North Macedonia and Serbia, will open the possibility for the development of a partnership between the courts and the media, which will contribute to a more effective administration of justice and the protection of freedom of expression." By the way, Serbia and the Netherlands were the first in Europe to bring together representatives of the police, public prosecutor's offices and the media community to monitor cases dealing with the safety of journalists. Tamara Filipović, General Secretary of NUNS, and Dr. Jelena Vučković, a member of the High Council of the Judiciary from among prominent lawyers, spoke about this at the conference.
The conference was closed with workshops where representatives of the courts, prosecutor's offices and the media made joint proposals for improving joint action, as well as with the screening of a film about Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kučiak and his fiancee Martina Kušnirova, who were mercilessly murdered in their home as victims of the collusion of the Slovak authorities at the time. and mafias with the aim of preventing journalistic reporting on corruption and crime.
